At Sugar Bay, our commitment to enriching young lives shines brightly through our carefully curated experiences. While our camp usually doesn’t host day visits for schools, we hold a special place in our hearts for the learners of Bongimfundo Primary School. This cherished tradition continued this year as we welcomed forty enthusiastic Grade 7 learners on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, for a day they will never forget, in the spirit of Mandela Day.
A significant highlight of their visit was the Swim Safe Workshop, where our Pro-Counselor Master Class Students and experienced counselors imparted essential water safety knowledge and skills. This session was both informative and fun, ensuring that the learners felt confident and secure around water.
Our Swim Safe Workshop is meticulously designed to cover all crucial aspects of water safety. The workshop begins with fundamental guidelines such as always informing a guardian about your whereabouts and ensuring an adult who can swim is present. We emphasize the importance of using flotation devices, understanding the pool's depth, and checking for clear visibility to avoid dangerous conditions. Moreover, we teach the children to recognize and avoid potential hazards like animals, rocks, and glass, and to be aware of weather conditions, particularly avoiding swimming during thunderstorms.
Practical scenarios play a significant role in our workshop. We simulate real-life situations where learners must practice calling for help if they or someone else is in trouble, demonstrating how to use flotation devices instead of attempting risky rescues themselves. Techniques like holding breath and climbing out of the pool safely are taught to ensure the children can manage emergencies effectively.
Nosipho, a 12-year-old learner, perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the day when she shared, "I was scared when they told us we were coming to Sugar Bay, kodwa kum'nandi lana! (It's so much fun here)." Her joy and amazement were mirrored by her peers, highlighting the profound impact such an experience can have.
Sugar Bay believes that every child is unique and deserves opportunities to grow and thrive. Our focus on experiential education allows children to develop crucial life skills through play. Activities like those enjoyed by the Bongimfundo learners teach teamwork, problem-solving, and social interaction, extending learning beyond the classroom in a fun and engaging way.
Our dedication to community service is at the heart of our mission. Bongimfundo Primary School benefits from our Service Learning initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between well-resourced and under-resourced schools. By fostering interactions and resource-sharing, we promote community development and encourage a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
Service Learning at Sugar Bay is about more than giving back; it's about creating lasting connections and learning experiences. When students visit us, we aim to nurture a greater sense of personal efficacy, broaden their perspectives, and enhance inter-cultural understanding. It's about breaking down barriers and building bridges of empathy and knowledge.
Reflecting on the joyful faces and enthusiastic participation of the Bongimfundo learners, we are reminded of the powerful impact such experiences can have. At Sugar Bay, we are proud to be a part of nurturing the potential of every child, one fun-filled, educational day at a time.
In the spirit of Nelson Mandela, who once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," we strive to make every moment at Sugar Bay a step towards a brighter future for these young minds. Mandela’s legacy of promoting education and equality resonates deeply with our mission, inspiring us to continue creating meaningful and transformative experiences for all children.
