What is Samurai Week?
Samurai Week at Sugar Bay is an immersive, themed camp experience designed to engage kids in a variety of activities inspired by the ancient warriors of Japan. From martial arts training to creative arts and competitive games, every day offers a new adventure. The campers will be divided into two teams, the Black Team and the Red Team, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition.
About Sugar Bay
Based on the American Summer Camp model, Sugar Bay stands out head and shoulders above every other South African camp since 2001. We are the only resort in South Africa specifically designed and built as a children-only resort. Holiday camps are our primary specialty, and we also offer school tours during the off-season.
We provide sleepover camps for children between the ages of 7 and 17 years old. With various transport options, kids and teens from all over South Africa—and the world—can enjoy the best school holiday they've ever had. Offering over 100 activities and a free choice system, children have the freedom to choose the activities they want to participate in without any compulsory requirements.

A Week Full of Adventure
Samurai Training: Each morning, campers will start their day with samurai training classes led by expert instructors. These sessions include Taekwondo, sword balancing, stick fighting, yoga, and meditation. Early risers who attend all classes will earn VIP perks for the camp's party night, including center stage privileges!
Daily Activities: Throughout the week, campers can participate in a variety of activities that cater to different interests:
Creative Arts: Calligraphy, poetry, painting, and lantern making.
Physical Activities: Sword balancing, flow arts, pool/water defense, and taekwondo.
Mindful Practices: Yoga, meditation, and spreading kindness initiatives.
The All-Camp Wipe Out Challenge:
Throughout the week, teams will prepare for the grand finale: the All-Camp Wipe Out Challenge. This exciting competition will test speed, racing skills, and technique in various challenges. The winning team will be rewarded with a VIP movie night, complete with special treats and seating arrangements.
Special Highlights:
Excursion Day (Wednesday, August 14th):
Mid-week, campers will enjoy an exciting excursion, providing a change of scenery and a new set of adventures. The day ends with a cozy campfire where stories and marshmallows are shared under the stars.
Themed Meal:
Each cabin will have the opportunity to participate in a sushi-making class, learning the art of creating delicious Japanese cuisine. This hands-on activity not only teaches culinary skills but also deepens the cultural immersion of Samurai Week.
Party Night & Fire Show (Friday, 16 August):
The week culminates with an epic party night featuring a spectacular fire show. Campers can showcase their new samurai skills and enjoy a festive evening with music, dancing, and a special sabrage demonstration—where a sword is used to open a champagne bottle!
