New to Sugar Bay?

Based on the American Summer Camp model, Sugar Bay stands out head and shoulders above every other South African camp since 2001. We are the only resort in South Africa that has been specifically designed and built as a children-only resort. Holiday camps are our primary specialty, and school tours are a secondary service that we offer out of the holiday season.

We offer sleepover camps for children between the ages of 7 and 17 years old. Our various transport options allow kids and teens from all over South Africa, and from all over the world, to enjoy the best school holiday they've ever had. We offer over 100 activities, and have a free choice system, in which children may choose what activities they want to participate in. There are no compulsory activities.

We make each and every week completely different from any other by giving it a unique theme. We introduce new activities, an extravagant themed dinner, and unforgettable weekly highlights to suit each theme. All these are in addition to our normal over 100 activities.

From the moment they arrive, campers will participate in the Sock Hanging Ceremony, where they will set a personal goal for the week—whether it’s making a new friend, overcoming a fear, or learning a new skill. These goals will be placed inside socks and hung up for the entire week as a reminder of their mission. At the end of the week, they will retrieve their socks and reflect on how they grew throughout their time at camp.

One of the highlights of Socks & Sandals Week is the cast of quirky characters that bring the theme to life. The Laundry Lady starts the week with ten pairs of socks, but as they mysteriously disappear, she becomes more and more frustrated, suspecting campers and counselors of hiding them. Throughout the week, she will go on a mission to retrieve them, often leading to unexpected surprises. Then there’s Adam Sandler, the resident camp comedian. Campers who manage to make him laugh get to help hide a sock, but those who fail will have to wear socks on their hands for a session. His Croc, which he treats like his best friend, carries Jibbitz charms that can be won in various mini-games.

A highlight of the week is the Code 2319 game, inspired by Monsters, Inc., where campers attempt to sneak a white sock onto a counselor. If they succeed, the entire camp joins in on the fun, causing chaos as the counselor is either dunked in the pool or soaked with water by the Laundry Lady. This interactive experience keeps campers engaged, encouraging them to strategize, work together, and embrace the unpredictable fun that defines Socks & Sandals Week.

The week is filled with themed carnival games, running throughout free periods and snack breaks. Campers will get to compete in giant sandal obstacle courses, musical socks, sandal tennis, monkey toes challenges, and the sock game, which requires them to guess mystery objects inside socks. Each time they win a game, they earn a Jibbitz charm, and the camper with the most at the end of the week will receive a special prize.

The fun continues with evening programs designed to build confidence and strengthen friendships. The junior campers will take part in the Traveling Sock of Friendship, a scavenger hunt that promotes teamwork, while the senior campers enjoy Sip & Scandal, a truth-or-dare style event that brings campers together for laughs and bonding. Later in the week, campers will test their courage in the Stinky Socks Challenge, where they must complete an obstacle course while keeping their socks as clean as possible. Another highlight is Socks & Stunts, a night of mystery sock challenges where campers must use all five senses to figure out what’s hidden inside.

One of the best parts of the week is the themed meal experience, particularly Cheese Day, where every meal is centered around delicious, cheesy dishes. Breakfast features scones with cheese, jam, and cream, followed by mac and cheese with cheese curls for lunch, and pizza with cheese puffs for dinner. This adds an extra layer of fun to an already exciting week.

As the camp draws to a close, campers will participate in the Sock Reflection Ceremony. Gathered around the final campfire, they will take down their socks and reflect on their goals. Whether they made new friends, faced their fears, or simply embraced the lighthearted nature of the week, they will leave with a sense of accomplishment and a collection of unforgettable memories.

Safety & Security

Our 1:3 staff-to-child ratio is the highest in the country, and 24-hour supervision ensures that your children are kept extra safe while having the time of their lives. Our camp counselors are specifically trained and experienced in the growth and developmental needs of the different age groups, as well as Emergency First Aid & CPR. We also have our own qualified lifeguards who accompany the children to the beach, lagoon, and swimming pool.

Socks & Sandals Week is more than just a holiday camp. It’s an opportunity for children to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and immerse themselves in a world of adventure and creativity. With no screens, no distractions, and plenty of fresh air, this experience encourages kids to laugh, play, and form meaningful connections in a fun and supportive environment.

The camp runs from April 6-13, 2025, at Sugar Bay in South Africa. Spaces are limited, so parents looking for an exciting, engaging, and enriching holiday camp should secure a spot now. This is an experience your child will talk about long after the week is over, making it the perfect way to spend their school break.
